PEDIATRIC IV THERAPY

Purpose of Module:

The purpose of this module is to learn the principles of Pediatric IV Therapy.

Time to complete Overview of Pediatric IV Therapy: 1 hour

You must spend at least ½ hour doing hands-on training.

1. Read Training Objectives.
2. Review American Heart Association’s Pediatric Advanced Life Support, chapter 5.
3. Review Mosby Paramedic Textbook, pp. 857-859.
4. Start an IV and administer fluids on an infant mannequin.
5. Take the posttest.
6. Give the module back to instructor or person in charge.

Training Objectives

1. Review technique for upper or lower extremity peripheral venous cannulation.
2. Review technique for scalp vein cannulation.
3. Review principles for Intraosseous cannulation.
4. Review technique for cannulation of central veins.
5. Discuss the complications of pediatric IV therapy.
