Basic Cardiac Life Support/CPR Review

Purpose of Module:
The purpose of this module is to review the principles of basic life support for the health care provider that includes foreign body airway obstruction of the adult, child and infant. Also, cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the adult, child and infant to include two rescuer CPR and integration of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) into the Emergency Medical System.

Time to Complete BLS Review Module: 2 hours

Directions for Using the BLS Review Module:

* You must spend at least 1 hour doing hands-on training.
1. Read the training objectives.
2. Review Brady Emergency Care, Eighth Edition pp. 798-822.
3. Watch the video tape by American Heart Association "BLS tape".
4. Use the MED EMT computer based training software and complete Chapter 9, Section 3 and Chapter 11 Section 4.
5. Use the American Heart Association CPR and Foreign Body Airway
6. Obstruction checklists & the Cardiac Arrest Management/AED checklist in this module to practice CPR on the adult, child, and pediatric mannequins.
7. Take the posttest.
8. Give the module back to the instructor or person in charge.

Training Objectives:

1. Explain the urgency for CPR measures.
2. Identify the proper way to position a patient to receive CPR.
3. Describe the techniques for dislodging foreign objects that are obstructing the airway.
4. Describe techniques for providing CPR to adults.
5. Describe techniques for providing CPR to children or infants.
6. Perform measures to relieve foreign body airway obstructions in adults, children and infants.
7. Perform measures to provide CPR to adults, children, and infants.

Activities to Perform:

1. Watch the video tape by American Heart Association "BLS tape".
2. Use the MED EMT computer based training software and complete Chapter 9, Section 3 and Chapter 11 Section 4.
3. Use the American Heart Association CPR and Foreign Body Airway Obstruction checklists & the Cardiac Arrest Management/AED checklist in this module to practice CPR on the adult, child, and pediatric mannequins. Take the posttest to give yourself feedback on this module.

Posttest:
